The banana is the number one fruit in the world and eating a banana a day keeps the doctor away. From a medical and biochemical perspective the banana is complex because it is a natural remedy that has many attributes. A good friend of mine sent me a e-mail concerning the healthy attributes of a banana and I was amazed when you compare it to an apple. The banana has twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value for food when we compare the price. The banana is truly a magical fruit when we analyze what it can do for the human body from a health perspective.
Therefore I begin to write an article on the healthy properties of a banana until I begin to read more about the global and political implications of the "banana wars". I never knew that a collapse of the banana industry could create an international conflict that eventually could elevate to a social disruption of world markets. There were historical roots that were connected to trading companies that were connected to exporting bananas. The major players in the dispute did not produce not one banana in their country for profit but were the central focus. As I continued to do more research I realized there was an interconnection each time I ate a banana.
Starting next week we will explore the magical journey of the banana. The political implications and the future of international trade. We will also explore the healthy attributes of a banana and the need for the huge corporations to ensure that the fruit retains and remains healthy. Finally we must discuss the future of the banana and will the small farmer be forced to leave the market, and enter the drug market. This is an extremely emotional subject and the informed citizen has an educated opinion. Let me know what you are thinking.
